Difference between Wood and Melamine Murphy Beds

CHOOSING YOUR MATERIAL FOR YOUR MURPHY BED

We provide our customers with a wide range between Real Wood Murphy Beds and Melamine Murphy beds. This is a choice most of our competitors are not able to offer. You will find that most companies who sell murphy beds will only build their beds out of Melamine and not real wood. WARNING: When comparing other companies, please make sure you ask if the murphy bed is real wood and does not consist of Melamine. Other companies who compete against our real wood murphy beds will use wording that will confuse you and hide the word melamine making it hard to understand what exactly you are getting. Of course you might be asking yourself "What is the biggest difference between Real Wood and Melamine?" We find the biggest difference that catches our customers is "COST" and "APPEARANCE". As Melamine is cheaper material and does not consist of having to be stained or painted, the cost of the bed will be lower than real wood. As a leading manufacturing of Real Wood murphy beds, we take pride in offering quality construction and finish with providing our customers with a piece of furniture that can be placed and see in any room of their house. To help you make the best choice, we have provide a the most important difference between having your murphy bed built from Real Wood and Melamine.

REAL WOOD

Because Melamine comes to us at a lower cost and already with a color and texture* (texture depends on color) it eliminates the need for finishing and labor verses wood. Melamine Murphy beds are normally purchased when used in a room that doesn't sit next to wood furniture and is great for the durability for kid play rooms.

MELAMINE

Real Murphy are our most popular murphy beds that we manufacture. They care the quality and style that only real wood brings and that are customers require for their home. We are one of the largest, if not the largest, real wood murphy bed manufactures in the United States. As a manufacturer we are able to offer our real wood murphy beds at pricing that others charge for melamine murphy beds. This is usually because a lot of suppliers are buying in the murphy bed and marketing it up in price.

WARNING: DON'T BE FOOLED

OUR COMPETITORS WILL USE WORDING TO MAKE YOU THINK YOU ARE BUYING A WOOD MURPHY BED, BUT IT IS REALLY A MELAMINE MURPHY BED.We are proud to be able to offer the option of both Real Wood and Melamine for your murphy bed and accompanying cabinetry. As you scroll down the this page you will offer the types of wood we offer accompanied by the stain color and finishes we offer for that wood. You will also come across our Melamine color selection with different levels of quality Melamine styles.

Why choose wood verses melamine murphy bed

real wood used in murphy bed

We offer two types of wood with our products, either Maple or Oak.

MAPLE

Maple is mainly used for furniture, paneling and millwork, kitchen cabinets, moldings, doors, musical instruments, and turnings. Maple is often used as a substitute for Cherry and Birch wood. Maple has a white and light tannish brown heartwood, with darker colored pith flecks. The wood is generally straight-grained with a fine uniform smooth texture. The wood of Maple is heavy, hard and strong. It has very good bending properties, with good crushing strength and shock resistance.

RED OAK

The Latin name for oak, Quercus, means "a fine tree." The oaks have been key in America's industrial transformation: railroad ties, wheels, plows, looms, barrels and, of course, furniture and floors. The oak is the state tree of New Jersey. The sapwood of red oak is white to light brown and the heartwood is a pinkish reddish brown. The wood is similar in general appearance to white oak, but with a slightly less pronounced figure due to the smaller rays. The wood is mostly straight-grained, with a coarse texture. The wood is hard and heavy, with medium bending strength and stiffness and high crushing strength. It is very good for steam bending. Great wear-resistance.

Common Question: What is the biggest difference between Oak and Maple?

Answer: Both woods are considered Hard Woods, so both are equally as strong as the other. The real difference is in the texture and apperance due to the grain. Maple is a smoother wood and will carry less grain appearance than Oak. Where Oak has more of a texture due to its grain, which makes the grain more visible. Customer typically choose the wood type that works for the style they are looking for OR that matches along with the wood used in other furniture in their room. If you would like to discuss more about the difference, please contact us.

  4. To achieve the classic look of hand stained furniture, each piece is slowly air-dried.
  5. A specially formulated, pre-catalyzed sanding sealer is pressure applied, penetrating all wood surfaces for uniform protection.
  6. All surfaces are lightly hand sanded, wiped down, and prepared for a second sealer coat.
  7. A second coat of the same specially formulated, pre-catalyzed sanding sealer is pressure applied.
  8. All surfaces are hand sanded for a final time to ensure a consistently smooth surface ready to accept the final finish coat. All surfaces are wiped down to remove all remaining dust.

Unfinished Projects (SAVE MONEY)

For these type of reasons we allow you to choose to have your murphy bed and any accompaning cabinetry unfinished. The another great reason to have your project unfinished is to save some money. We offer a discount (seen below) by choosing unfinished when you purchase.

A few tips to remember when you finish the bed:

  • MAKE SURE TO FINISH ALL PIECES BEFORE ASSEMBLING YOUR MURPHY BED - this allows for you  to reach all areas.
  • If you are staining, make sure you lighting sand the bed before applying the stain. This will allow the grain to be more open to accept the stain.
  • If you are painting, make sure you apply a primer to the bare wood first. After priming, scuff the surface so that it is smooth and then apply your paint.
  • If you are trying to paint over an already finished surface; Scuff surface, apply primer, scuff til smooth, then apply your paint. Do not just apply paint to a laquered surface, it needs a primer to bond to.
  • Is a good ideas to tape up all handles and hardware (or remove them) before applying your finish.
