Classic. Cozy. Convenient. There's nothing better than a beautiful, comfortable Murphy bed. For years, The Bedder Way has been offering the best mattress for Murphy beds on the market. It's safe to say we know a thing or two about the dos and don'ts of wall bed mattresses. To give you a better understanding of the requirements, our experts have put together an in-depth guide. We tell you what to look for, what to avoid and what The Bedder Way can do to help you get the right Murphy bed mattress.
More floor space, easy access, sleek design - there are many benefits to using a Murphy bed. To get the best use out of it, you'll need an appropriate wall bed mattress. Our experts at The Bedder Way suggest:
Most innerspring mattresses that range from 9 to 12 inches will weigh enough to pair well with our Murphy beds.
Due to the depth of our Murphy beds, your wall mattress should be no thicker than 12 inches. This depth will allow room for your blankets and comforter to remain on your bed when closing. Shop for a Murphy bed mattress at The Bedder Way to find a wall mattress you'll love that meets all of these requirements.
Have a wall bed mattress thicker than 12 inches? No problem! Just give us a call and let us know how thick your mattress is, and for a small up-charge, we can increase the depth of your Murphy bed to accommodate up to a 15 inch mattress (making the depth of your Murphy bed approximately 20 inches).
Our Murphy beds have a unique, built-in mattress platform. The “backbone” of a Bedder Way Murphy bed is our strut framework which is soundly constructed with kiln-dried, solid poplar struts. Each strut is built by gluing and fastening two ¾” x 1½” pieces of solid poplar wood in an “L” shape, creating a beam structure which minimizes deflection and supports up to 2,500 lbs.
The Bedder Way's wall mattress straps are placed on the furthest corners of the Murphy bed when open. These straps are installed over the mattress before you place your fitted sheet.
The straps hold your mattress tight to the bed face, keeping them together when the bed is opened and closed. The straps also keep the mattress from leaning back towards the wall when the bed is closed which prevents it from touching any pictures you may have on the back wall. Below, we've broken down how to use the straps the right way to get the most out of your Murphy bed mattress.
While the above is an overview of Murphy bed mattress requirements, we often get questions from people on the finer details. If you don't see your question listed below, check out other common questions or contact us and we'll be happy to assist you.
A Murphy bed mattress can hold up to 2500 lbs. Keep in mind that our Murphy beds are very similar to any normal bed platform. For instance, The Bedder Way's Murphy beds have four points that touch the ground. Additionally, our strut framework distributes your weight evenly across the bed in the same way a box spring works. This ensures the bed's comfort and stability.
No, latex mattresses cannot be used on Murphy beds. Unlike those with innersprings or memory foam, latex mattresses cannot stand on-end for long periods of time which will result in an inability to operate the bed.
No, you cannot use a blow up air mattress with our Murphy beds. They are not heavy enough to counterbalance our piston lift system. Select comfort mattresses are also not recommended due to their lack of weight.
We do not offer king size Murphy beds at this time. The face of our bed comes as one large piece, so we have found that most spaces are unable to accommodate a solid piece that is roughly the size of a king size mattress. Remember, the face of our Murphy bed is slightly larger than a corresponding box spring. Most king size mattresses rest on two twin-size box springs for just this reason.
Most of our customers who purchase vertical beds will hang a picture on the wall inside the bed, which makes it more decorative when the bed is down. When using a 12-inch mattress (maximum size) you will have 2 inches of space left inside when the bed is closed. There are plenty of other ways to decorate with a Murphy bed.
