Our Finishing Process (top of page)

At The Bedder Way Co., not only do we take great pride in providing a space saving solution, but also a beautiful, REAL WOOD fine furniture addition to your home as well. We hand select only the finest Oak and Birch wood for the construction of our wall beds. We then utilize a 10-step finishing process to ensure your wall bed has an attractive and durable finish.

  1. After every construction detail is double checked, all surfaces are hand sanded to achieve a fine furniture feel.
  2. After the surfaces are sanded, all remaining dust is removed and the surfaces are wiped clean.
  3. A deep penetrating stain is hand applied to reveal the natural beauty of the wood. All stained surfaces are evenly hand rubbed to eliminate any excess stain.
  4. To achieve the classic look of hand stained furniture, each piece is slowly air-dried.
  5. A specially formulated, pre-catalyzed sanding sealer is pressure applied, penetrating all wood surfaces for uniform protection.
  6. All surfaces are lightly hand sanded, wiped down, and prepared for a second sealer coat.
  7. A second coat of the same specially formulated, pre-catalyzed sanding sealer is pressure applied.
  8. All surfaces are hand sanded for a final time to ensure a consistently smooth surface ready to accept the final finish coat. All surfaces are wiped down to remove all remaining dust.
  9. A premium quality, pre-catalyzed, hi-solids lacquer topcoat is pressure applied to attain a handsome, durable satin finish.
  10. Before every wall bed is packaged and made ready for shipping, they are inspected and polished, assuring each wall bed meets our high quality standards.

WOOD SPECIES     (top of page)

BIRCH

From sap to bark, birch trees are used to make everything from beer to toothpicks. Native Americans stretched birch bark on their canoe frames and used the wood for their arrows. The birch is New Hampshire's state tree. It is also popular as an ornamental tree and has gained the nickname "Mother Tree" because birches were planted at the White House to honor the mothers of U.S. presidents. The oil extracted from the bark contains a chemical used to treat rheumatism and inflammations.

General Description
Yellow birch has a white sapwood and light tannish brown heartwood. The wood is generally straight-grained with a fine uniform smooth texture, perfect for painting. More customers who have maple furniture tend to have birch stained to match their furniture.

Working Properties
The wood works fairly easily, glues well with care, takes stain extremely well, and nails and screws satisfactorily where pre-boring is advised.

Physical Properties
The wood of yellow birch is heavy, hard and strong. It has very good bending properties, with good crushing strength and shock resistance.

RED OAK

The Latin name for oak, Quercus, means "a fine tree." The oaks have been key in America's industrial transformation: railroad ties, wheels, plows, looms, barrels and, of course, furniture and floors. The oak is the state tree of New Jersey.

General Description
The sapwood of red oak is white to light brown and the heartwood is a pinkish reddish brown. The wood is similar in general appearance to white oak, but with a slightly less pronounced figure due to the smaller rays. The wood is mostly straight-grained, with a coarse texture.

Working Properties
Red oak machines well, nailing and screwing are good although pre-boring is recommended, and it can be stained to a good finish. It can be stained with a wide range of finish tones. It dries slowly.

Physical Properties
The wood is hard and heavy, with medium bending strength and stiffness and high crushing strength. It is very good for steam bending. Great wear-resistance.
